World Cup fever continues to sweep across the world and teams from across the Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council area got to showcase their football skills at a Walking Football World Cup last week.

Held at Score Complex, Coleraine, the event delivered by Age Friendly Causeway in partnership with Inspire and supported by the Irish Football Association (IFA), COAST, Northern Health and Social Care Trust (NHSCT) and Western Health and Social Care Trust (WHSCT), brought together older people from across the Causeway Coast and Glens for a day of sport, social connection and wellbeing.

Teams of over 60s took part in a series of friendly walking football matches throughout the morning, with participants representing communities from across the area. The event also featured information stands from support organisations, a small display from Causeway Museum Service showcasing local football legend Harry Gregg, and opportunities for social engagement throughout the day.

Following the matches, Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council, Councillor Dawn Huggins attended to present medals and the trophy to participating teams, she said:

“It was a privilege to attend and see so many people taking part with such enthusiasm. This is exactly the kind of community-led initiative that makes a real difference to people’s wellbeing and quality of life.”

Stephanie Scott, Age Friendly Coordinator for Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council, said: “This was a fantastic example of partnership working in action, bringing people together to enjoy physical activity, social connection and positive ageing in a really accessible and welcoming way.

“It was brilliant to see so many older people getting involved, supporting each other and having fun.”

Cameron Dade, Physical Wellbeing Coordinator with Inspire, added: “Walking football continues to prove how powerful sport can be in supporting both physical and mental wellbeing. Events like this reduce isolation, build confidence and give people a real sense of connection and enjoyment.”
