With just two weeks to go representatives from Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council, have joined staff from Royal Portrush along with the Mayor, to chat about all things relating to the upcoming 153rd Open.

Invited media had a chance to ask about the recently completed ‘Road to the Open’ golf programme along with plans such as the Council led ‘Our Town is Open’ campaign and planned free events for Kerr Street. As well as seeking more information on the extent of behind-the-scenes planning that goes into hosting this world class event.

During the day, the final schools visit as part of The Road to the Open golf programme took place with the children of Portrush Primary School.

The pupils were treated to a tour from Gary McNeill, Head Golf Professional at Royal Portrush Golf Club. It included a stop at the iconic first tee and 18th green, where the champion golfer will receive the accolade of lifting the claret jug this July.

The children also took part in golf activities and had pictures taken with the world-famous Claret Jug trophy, while cameras covered the visit as it unfolded throughout the day

Interviews took place with the Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens, Councillor Oliver McMullan, representatives from Royal Portrush, alongside Council’s Sports Development Manager Stephen McCartney and Project Manager for the 153rd Open, Jonny McCarron.

Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens, Cllr McMullan said: “Thank you all for coming today and to everyone involved it what will be a fantastic event for us.

“With just over 2 weeks to go until the 153rd Open we are today pleased to welcome the last group of children from Portrush Primary School who recently completed The Road to the Open golf programme.

“We want to let everyone know we are prepared for the return of the Open and welcome everyone who comes along to the golf. We’d encourage members of the public to visit the whole of our Council area, as our towns and villages are open, and will be delighted to welcome you all.”

Gary McNeill, Head Golf Professional Royal Portrush Golf Club added: "It is my hope that the return of The Open Championship to Royal Portrush this Summer will inspire children and young people to get involved in the game of golf.

“There is no better way to encourage the next generation of golfers than by getting them involved in Council's Golf Camps and The Road to the Open project which has been running throughout the last few months.”
