That this Council sets up a 250 USA Working Group, of no more than 8 Councillors by D’hondt, to explore opportunities for the Borough to tie into the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Declaration of Independence given the historical connections between Northern Ireland and the United States. This initiative would aim to commemorate the role that individuals from Northern Ireland, played in shaping American history during the Revolutionary era and beyond. Furthermore, that we would write to other councils located in County Antrim namely Antrim & Newtownabbey Borough Council, Lisburn and Castlereagh Borough Council, and Mid and East Antrim Borough Council to engage on a joint working group to maximise opportunities from this key anniversary.
18. Notice of Motion Proposed by Councillor Jonathan McAuley, seconded by Councillor Kyle
Following the successful event ran by council for the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe, I propose that council look at an event to remember and commemorate the end of the second world war (VJ Day).
As significant, as VE day was in 1945 we need to remember the sacrifice by many of our service personnel who continued the war for freedom for a further three months.
19. Notice of Motion proposed by Councillor Ciarán McQuillan, seconded by Councillor Peacock
That this Council recognises the importance of engaging young people in the political process and believes that more must be done to create meaningful opportunities for youth participation in civic life. Therefore, this Council proposes to work in partnership with Youth Services and local schools to establish a Youth Council within the Causeway Coast and Glens.
This Youth Council would serve as a platform to empower young people, encourage their involvement in public life, and ensure their voices are heard on issues that affect them. By fostering political awareness, democratic engagement, and leadership skills among young people from all backgrounds, the Council hopes to inspire a new generation to become actively involved in the political system. This initiative will help elected members to better understand and respond to the needs and aspirations of our young people.
20. Notice of Motion proposed by Councillor Chivers, seconded by Councillor McGurk
That this Council recognises the importance of adequate toilet and amenity facilities at Magilligan Point for both the recreational users of the beach and the many tourists and travellers availing of the ferry service.
The Council notes with concern that these facilities have been closed for some time, to the detriment of the visitor experience and local amenity value of this popular coastal location.
Accordingly, this Council calls on officers to bring a paper to the Environmental Services Committee outlining options for the re-establishment of toilet and amenity facilities at Magilligan Point.
This paper should explore a range of potential models, including both seasonal and year-round provision, and should assess operational, financial and logistical considerations relevant to each.
The paper should be brought forward in a timely manner to enable Council to consider and make decisions such that, should Council agree to proceed, facilities can be re-opened ahead of the 2026 tourist season.
21. Notice of Motion proposed by Alderman McAuley, seconded by Councillor Storey
The Joey Dunlop 25 Celebration was a special occasion that brought thousands of people to Ballymoney from across the world to celebrate and remember Joey Dunlop OBE MBE a legend in motorcycle racing and a citizen and Freeman of our Borough of whom we are rightly proud.
We therefore propose that Council officers now explore options in conjunction with the Dunlop Family to create a permanent exhibition of memorabilia, in a way that reflects our appreciation for the life, legacy and memory of Joey Dunlop OBE MBE
